Former Bangladesh parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury was arrested by Dhaka’s Detective Branch (DB) and sent to jail on Tuesday in an attempted murder case linked to the July 2024 unrest.

Officials said she was detained late Monday night from her residence in Dhanmondi. Confirming the arrest, DB Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said, “We have arrested Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury,” without elaborating on the grounds.

A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court, presided over by Md Jewel Rana, rejected a two-day remand plea and ordered her to be sent to jail, court officials said.

The case stems from a complaint filed by Mohammad Ashraful, who alleged he was shot in Dhaka’s Azimpur area on July 18, 2024. The case, initially filed on May 25 last year and later recorded as an FIR on July 17 following court directives, names former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 129 others.

Separately, Chowdhury has also been named in another case filed in Rangpur over the fatal shooting of gold worker Muslim Uddin during the July uprising. The complaint, filed by the victim’s wife Dilruba Akter on August 27, 2024, names 17 individuals, including former commerce minister Tipu Munshi, who is already in custody. Authorities have not confirmed whether Chowdhury’s arrest is directly linked to one or multiple cases.

Chowdhury, a senior Awami League leader, served as Speaker from April 30, 2013, until stepping down on September 2, 2024, weeks after the fall of Hasina’s government following a mass uprising.

Officials said further details regarding the charges and scope of the investigation are expected as the probe progresses.
