Talking to media here Mukherjee said, the government was also not looking at raising any duties to bridge the short fall in tax revenue.

Mukherjee’s comment comes two days after defending subsidized diesel to farm sector in the Lok Sabha , while observing that a mechanism can be worked out for not subsidizing 15 percent Diesel supply used by passenger cars.

He, however, expressed concern on soaring inflation and said it may come in the way of sustaining our growth momentum.

On the downgrading of US credit rating by Standard and Poors, Mukherjee said, it has an adverse impact but there is no need to press panic button.

He said India’s economic fundamentals are strong and its markets can withstand negative external pressure. He said the country’s growth story is intact and Indian economy is expected to grow above 8 per cent in the current fiscal at a time when the major economies of the world are projected to grow less than 4 per cent.
