The flood situation in many districts of north Bihar continues to be grim due to heavy flow of water.  At least 26 people have lost their lives in flood related incidents.

Maximum causalities have been reported from Supaul, Purnia and Kishanganj. More than  10,000 houses have collapsed or washed away. Over 25 lakh people, spread over 10 districts, are reeling under the impact of floods.

Surging water of Mahananda river is spreading in Katihar, Purnia and Kishanganj following heavy rain in catchment areas of Nepal.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said, embankments would be constructed on river Mahananda in five phases. Mr. Kumar said, Principal Secretary of Agriculture Department has been made Special Commissioner in Katihar to oversee relief operation.

Meanwhile, the State Government has instructed to distribute two thousand quintals of foodgrains among flood victims everyday.

The chief minister had earlier instructed officials to distribute dry ration and cooked food to people reeling under floods.

He said villages, where communication has been snapped, should be approached with boats and with the help of NDRF and SDRF personnel to distribute relief material among the flood-hit people and to distribute halogen tablets for purification of drinking water in these areas.

During the review meeting, Mr Kumar was told that more than 200 relief camps were working in the affected areas, the release said.

The state disaster management department said at least 22 people have died in floods in ten districts of Bihar so far.
