Flood situation remains grim in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Assam with over 200 deaths reported in Bihar alone. Centre continues to provide assistance in rescue and relief operations.

The toll in Bihar floods has crossed 205 mark, as the flood situation worsened, affecting over one crore people across 18 districts in the state. Samastipur is the latest one included in the list of flood-affected districts, taking the number of inundated districts to 18.

According to the state Disaster Management department, a total of 28 National Disaster Response Force teams comprising 1,152 personnel with 118 boats are involved in rescue and relief operations. Also, 16 teams of the State Disaster Response Force comprising 446 personnel are helping people in the flood-hit areas with 92 boats. Besides, over 1800 community kitchens are catering to 3.72 lakh people in several flood-hit areas.

UTTAR PRADESH

The flood situation worsened in eastern UP districts adjoining Nepal today following continuous rains and discharge of water in rivers with the district administration here seeking the help of Army in relief and rescue operations.

The movement of traffic on the Gorakhpur-Sonauli road towards Nepal has come to a standstill with the waters of Rohin river inundating Maniram township and the national highway, sources in the administration said.

In view of the situation, District Magistrate Rajiv Rautela has ordered closure of all schools till tomorrow and sought the help of the Army in relief and rescue operations.

After the authorities undertook works to plug the breach in the embankment on Rohin river in Campierganj area two days ago to save water reaching some areas in the city, another breach was observed in it this morning leading to panic.

As many as 105 villages of the district have been hit by the floods of which 35 are totally submerged and the villagers have been shifted to safer places, they said.

Teams of NDRF are providing food and drinking water to the flood-hit people with the help of 169 boats.

According to a report from Siddhartnagar, Army helicopters assisted in extending relief material to the affected people yesterday.

ASSAM

The flood situation in Assam marginally improved, even as three more persons lost their lives, taking the toll to 63, with over 22 lakh people suffering across 16 districts in the state. According to a report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Morigaon is the worst-affected district with 5.29 lakh sufferers, followed by Barpeta with 5.07 lakh people affected in the deluge.

Authorities are running 328 relief camps and distribution centres in 13 districts, where 68,014 people have taken shelter. Brahmaputra is presently flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat in Jorhat and Dhubri town.

WEST BENGAL

The overall flood situation in West Bengal has improved with no major rainfall happening in the past two days. Three more deaths were reported to the central control room at the state secretariat in Kolkata, taking the toll to 55 since July 21. Over 52 lakh people have been hit by the floods in six north Bengal districts of Coochbehar, South Dinajpur, North Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Malda.

Uma Bharti reviews flood situation in country

Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti held a high-level meeting in New Delhi yesterday to review the flood situation in the country and the action being taken in this regard. She directed the concerned organizations under her Ministry to extend all possible help to the affected people. Ms Bharti also directed Central Water Commission (CWC), Ganga Flood Control Commission and Brahmaputra Board to undertake an exercise to identify and map reaches vulnerable to erosion and landslide along the banks of the rivers.

The Minister was briefed about the pro-active steps taken by the CWC during the floods. She was also apprised that the Ministry has issued seven specific district-wise advisories on anticipated floods. The ministry has also issued dam-wise advisories for water release to facilitate early NDRF and SDRF deployment and operation of reservoir gates.
