THE RIVER Yamuna in Delhi has breached danger mark this evening. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, his government and the Centre are monitoring the situation. He said the rise in water level in the Yamuna is due to discharge of record 8.28 lakh Cusecs of water from Haryana.

A portion of the Nigambodh Ghat in east Delhi was flooded in the evening, officials said.

The pyres facing the river have turned into islands as Yamuna waters entered the ghat, even as a few people went on with the last rituals of their family members. “Water from the Yamuna has entered the front portion of the ghat, where a few pyres are located. These pyres are out in the open and used generally by people from hill states, who follow their own rituals,” a senior EDMC official said.

The four states are on high alert after heavy rains led to floods that killed at least 28 people, while about 22 are missing. Flood alert was sounded in parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh as Yamuna and other rivers were in spate. Haryana has asked the Army to remain on standby after 8.14 lakh cusec water was released from the Hathini Kund barrage in the Yamuna river.
