The Chennai Airport received a Vande Bharat Mission flight last night carrying 180 stranded passengers including three children from Kuala Lumpur last night. They were quarantined after the mandatory testing for COVID-19 infection.

An Air India Express flight from Muscat with about 200 people is scheduled to reach the city. It will be followed by another Air India aircraft from Dammam in Saudi Arabia that will touch down in the city after a stopover at Kochi in neighbouring Kerala. More from our correspondent:

“Officials in Tamil Nadu claim that the state maintains a good track record on COVID-19 fatality rate, which currently remains at 0.66 per cent, far less than the national average. However, the state and her capital Chennai witnessed a new high in the newly infected cases yesterday. The state tally reached 8002 as a record 798 people were tested positive on a single day yesterday. Chennai contributed to the maximum as is the case in the last many days, with the number surging by 538 new patients taking the total to 4371. About sixty media personnel were among the infected people, of which over 45 have been already discharged and the others are stable and are about to be sent back home after cure.
