Indian stock market benchmarks, the Sensex and the Nifty 50, ended almost flat today, in a volatile session, with Nifty managing to hold above 22,500. 

At close, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex was down 53 points or 0.07 per cent, settling at 73,953. Meanwhile, NSE Nifty witnessed a gain of 27 points or 0.12 per cent, at 22,529.

From the Sensex basket, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Power Grid, Tech Mahindra and NTPC were among the major gainers.

In contrast, Nestle India, Maruti and IndusInd Bank were among the biggest laggards.   
 
In the broader market at the BSE, the Midcap sector rose 0.34 percent and the Smallcap index declined 0.18 percent.

In sectoral indices at the BSE, Metal sector gained 4.08 percent, the Utilities sector added 1.99 percent and the Power index rose 1.96 percent. On the other hand, the Information and Technology index declined 0.96 percent and the FMCG index cracked 0.51 percent.

In the forex market, the rupee closed at 83 rupees and 31 paise against the US dollar today. The dollar index, which indicates the US dollar’s strength against a basket of six other leading currencies was down at 104.53 in intra-day trade.
