Benchmark indices rebounded and ended higher in the volatile session today with Nifty around 22,650 as record GST collections in April, positive manufacturing data, and foreign fund inflows boosted investor sentiment.
The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 128 points or 0.17 per cent to close at 74,611 points, while the Nifty-50 added 43 points or 0.19 per cent to settle at 22,648.
From the Sensex basket, Power Grid, Asian Paints, Tata Motors, NTPC, and Tata Steel were among the major gainers.
In contrast, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, Wipro, and ICICI Bank were among the laggards.
In the broader market at the BSE, the Midcap sector jumped 0.91 per cent, while the Smallcap index rose 0.30 per cent.
In sectoral indices at the BSE, the Utilities sector gained 1.50 per cent, the Power sector rose 1.47 per cent and the Oil and Gas sector jumped 1.40 per cent.
In contrast, the Bankex sector declined 0.45 per cent while the Telecommunication sector fell 0.23 per cent and the Teck index slipped 0.22 per cent.
