Indian equities witnessed a sharp sell-off on 13 February 2026, as both benchmark indices tumbled amid weak global cues and sectoral pressure. The Sensex plunged 1,048 points to 82,626.76, while the Nifty 50 slumped 336 points to 25,471, marking one of the steepest declines in recent weeks. Investor sentiment was rattled by renewed concerns over AI-driven disruption in IT services, with fears that Indian outsourcing firms may face tougher competition compared to global peers. This weighed heavily on the Nifty IT index, which extended its slide with a 1.44% drop, following Thursday’s 4.72% crash — its worst single-day fall in 10 months.

Market Overview

  • Sensex: Closed at 82,626.76, down 1,048 points
  • Nifty 50: Ended at 25,471, down 336 points
  • Market Breadth: Over 2,700 stocks declined on the BSE, reflecting broad-based weakness
  • Global Context: Weak cues from US markets, with Nasdaq down 2%, weighed heavily on Indian equities

Broader market participation remained weak, with midcap and smallcap indices down over 1%, and more than 2,700 stocks declining on the BSE, reflecting risk-off sentiment. Among Sensex constituents, Hindustan Unilever, Titan, Tata Steel, Adani Ports, TCS, PowerGrid, Reliance Industries, BEL, Asian Paints, M&M, HDFC Bank, and HCL Technologies were major laggards. In contrast, Bajaj Finance and SBI emerged as rare gainers, supported by resilient credit growth outlook.

Global factors added to the pressure, as strong US jobs data dampened hopes of early Fed rate cuts, while a 2% Nasdaq fall intensified valuation concerns for technology stocks worldwide.
