
Russia launched their World Cup Football campaign in style last night in Moscow thrashing Saudi Arabia 5-nil in the opening match of the tournament.
Gazinsky opened the scoring with a header after 12 minutes of play in the Group A game. The goal prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to turn to the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, seated alongside FIFA chief, and shake his hand.
Thereafter, Denis Cheryshev added a second before Dzyuba got the third in the 71st minute. Cheryshev then added his second goal with a superb finish, before Golovin capped a magnificent performance with the fifth goal in injury time with a superb free-kick.
Russian fans joined in an outpouring of jubilation following the victory which was their first in over eight months since October. Russia will meet Egypt in their next match next Tuesday, while Saudi Arabia will look to rebound against group favourites Uruguay on Wednesday. On the second day of the World Cup Football tournament in Russia, three matches are scheduled for today. The day’s first enounter will be played between Egypt and Uruguay at 5.30 p.m.
In the second fixture, Morocco will take on Iran at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in St. Petersburg at 8.30 p.m. The third match will be played between Portugal and Spain at 11.30 p.m, at the Fisht Stadium, Sochi.
