Congress on Sunday alleged that the peasant community in the country was in despair with the Modi-led government’s constant neglect, reduction in farmer welfare schemes and inconsiderate attitude towards selective states in providing “disaster funds” due to which agri exports have considerably dwindled in the past three years.

To highlight the agony and plight of farmers in the past three years of Modi regime, the Congress has published a eight-page booklet titled ” Aandata-mrityu ka abhishaap”.

On farmers victims of governmental apathy and neglect, the booklet says that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s record shows farmer’s suicides with 35 happening on a daily basis. In 2015 alone, 12,602 peasants and farm workers committed suicides and in 2014 this figure was 12,360. Experts say , 14,000 ryots and farm workers took the extreme step in 2016.

Calling the BJP’s policy of waiving off the peasants’ loans as a sham, Congress said the Modi government has let some ‘affluent friends’ go off from paying loans but has not written off the loans of the “food provider” to the country. ‘The party is of the view that peasants constitute 62 per cent of the population and had their loans been written off, the level of food production in the country would have risen thereby increasing agricultural exports’ the party claimed.
