A farmer who attempted suicide at Aam Aadmi Party’s anti-Land Bill rally has been declared dead. The farmer tried to commit suicide by hanging himself from a tree at the rally at Jantar Mantar in Delhi today. The incident occurred when the rally was going on in the presence of AAP Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other party leaders. The man was immediately rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The farmer who attempted suicide was from Dausa in Rajasthan.
While AAP has blamed Delhi Police for not acting in time to save the farmer, many believe that this happened in the presence of AAP leaders and they should have made efforts to save the precious life.
Who stopped AAP leader from saving him
Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi and instructed him to institute an inquiry into the incident of farmer suicide in Delhi. He has also sought detailed report on the incident. Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the incident.
Politics over the tragic incident started when Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that police did not listen to him as it was not under his control. The party blamed Delhi police for not acting on time to save the farmer who committed suicide at AAP rally.
AAP leader Kumar Vishwas said cops ignored repeated pleas to help the man and it was Aam Aadmi Party workers who took the farmer to the hospital. He said no leader came down from the stage and stopped the rally after the incident for fear of a stampede breaking out. Mr Vishwas said the farmer has sent a message through his suicide and it is time nation wake up to the plight of farmers. Party leader Sanjay Singh claimed that AAP showed sensitivity, and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia went to the hospital immediately after news came that the farmer had died.
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi has also visited RML hospital where farmer was brought after committing suicide in AAP rally in New Delhi. Mr Gandhi, who was accompanied by party leader Ajay Maken, spoke to the doctors in the hospital. Talking to media, Mr Gandhi expressed his sadness and said this is not the first case where farmers had to commit suicide. Saying that Narendra Modi government was a government for a handful of corporates, Mr Gandhi said his party is with the farmers of the country.
Reacting to the death, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said that it is saddened that such an environment has been created in the country that farmers are committing suicide. He said, it is unfortunate that the rally was continued and no one tried to stop or save the farmer.
