The Secretary General of Supreme Election Committee of Egypt, Justice Hatem Bagato will sign the MoU and exchange documents with the Chief Election Commissioner of India, V.S. Sampath on Tuesday.

Speaking on the topic “Elections and Transition in Egypt” organised here on Moday by the Observer Research Foundation, Justice Bagato said that Egypt was undergoing a critical phase of transition to democracy and was prepared to learn from experience of the world.

He said that Shariah law would remain in the new Constitution and would not be a problem to communal harmony. It remain in 1966, 1971 and 1982 Constitution and had caused no such problems.

Justice Bagato is also the Vice-President of the Supreme Constitutional Court and the President of the College of Commissioners of the Supreme Constitutional Court. Before taking up his current responsibilities, he was also the Rapporteur of the Constitutional Amendments Commission.
