The Enforcement Directorate in Mumbai has registered a case against controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act. A case has also been registered against Naik’s NGO Islamic Research Foundation.
The fresh FIRs have been lodged after the National Investigation Agency, NIA had earlier registered an FIR against Naik and IRF. Recently the economic offences wing of the Mumbai Police investigated the foreign funding of the Islamic Research Foundation.
Prior to this, the Maharashtra government had instructed the Mumbai Police to conduct an inquiry into the content and nature of Zakir Naik’s speeches, while the Central government had sanctioned an inquiry against him and the IRF.
