A delegation of the Election Commission of India, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, held a series of meetings here on today (Friday). The meetings were part of the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra.
The CEC, along with Election Commissioners Mr. Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. S S Sandhu met Maharashtra’s Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik and Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla. During a meeting, The ECI today sought an explanation from the Chief Secretary and DGP as to why a compliance report has not been submitted with regard to the transfer of officials.
It may be recalled that the Commission had issued directions via a letter on 31st of July 2024 to transfer all officers involved in the election duty process, who have been serving in the same revenue district for more than three years. While a compliance report was expected by 20th of August, the Chief Electoral Officer, Maharashtra forwarded a partial compliance report furnished by the state DGP on 25th of September while no report has still been received from the Chief Secretary. Seeking immediate compliance with the instruction and submission of the report thereof, the ECI has asked the Chief Secretary and DGP to explain the circumstances as to why the compliance reports were not furnished within the stipulated time and despite repeated reminders.
Meanwhile, the delegation today also held meetings with the representatives of over 23 central and state enforcement agencies. Besides meeting the representatives of national and state parties for their feedback, the commission today also reviewed poll preparations via meetings with the Divisional Commissioners of Konkan and Pune. Before wrapping up its visit, the Commission will meet with the Chiefs of Nashik, Aurangabad, Amravati and Nagpur Divisions tomorrow.
