Tremors lasting about 6  seconds shook houses, AMN correspondent felt the tremor and came out of the building for sometime when quake came at 11.28 . The tremors hit south Delhi just before midnight, the reporter said.

Television channels reported that an earthquake had hit all the national capital region (NCR) and its magnitude reported to be 4.2 on Richter scale. The epicenter of the quake was in Sonipat in Haryana.   

Reports say that Kashmir and Utrakhand also experience the jolt.

Earlier on Wednesday Minister of state for home affairs Mullappally Ramachandran told the Rajya Sabha that Delhi is among thirty important cities in the country that fall into high risk seismic zone while Srinagar is among places at very high risk of earthquakes.

Minister said that towns like Almora, Ambala, Bahraich, Barauni, Bhuj, Bulandshahar, Darbhanga, Darjeeling, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Jorhat, Kohima, Ludhiyana, Mandi, Monghyr, Moradabad, Nainital, Patna, Pilibhit, Roorkee, Sadiya, Shimla and Tezpur fall under seismic zone IV and V.

“While Delhi, Amritsar and Chandigarh fall under zone IV (high risk), Srinagar comes under zone V (very high risk)” Minister said  in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

As per seismic map of India prepared by Bureau of Indian Standards 58.6% areas of the country fall into earthquake zone V (very high risk), IV (high risk) and III (moderate risk),” the minister said.
