The massive earthquake caused damage to property across the Kashmir Valley. There were reports of damage to dozens of government and private buildings in Badgam, Anantnag, Baramulla, Pulwama, Kulgam, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts. Almost all telecom networks in the valley were defunct for around two hours after the tremors jolted Kashmir. Several houses developed cracks in Rajouri area of Jammu.

People in the entire Valley abandoned offices, business places and homes and ran out. Two elderly women in south and north Kashmir died of heart attack after strong tremors rattled Kashmir. Reports said a boy was killed and his father critically injured in Reasi district of Jammu region. Two Army personnel were also reported to be injured in north Kashmir’s Sopore area. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, enquired about the situation from Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister has directed the state administration to remain in readiness to mount any relief and rescue operation. The State government has set up a control room at Civil Secretariat Srinagar. State’s Relief Minister Basharat Bukhari in a high level meeting reviewed the situation obtaining in the wake of massive earthquake and directed the administration to collect information related to loss of life and damage to public and private property across the Valley and elsewhere in the State.
