NEW DELHI: The festival of Dussehra symbolizing the victory of truth and good over evil is being celebrated in most part of the country on Sunday. The effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhakarna will be consigned to flames at many places. The idols of Devi Durga will also be immersed in various rivers, lakes and ponds.

The President, Vice President and Prime Minister have greeted the people on the occasion. In her message, the President, Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil said that this festival inspires us to work for peace, unity and well being of the country and strengthens the spirit of harmony and oneness.

In his message, Vice President Hamid Ansari wished the festival to bring peace prosperity and joy in our lives.

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh in his message has said that the Dussehra festival symbolises India’s tradition of communal harmony and unity in diversity.

UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has also greeted the people on the occasion of Dussehra saying may this festive season bring peace, prosperity and progress throughout the country.

In Uttar Pradesh, Dussehra is being celebrated throughout the state. The effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhakarna will be consigned to flames at many places.

The Navaratri came to an end on Saturday, the people are celebrating Dussehra Sunday with religious enthusiasm and joy across the state.

In Ayodhya, Kanak Bhavan, Hanuman Garhi and other famous temples have been colourfully decorated.

On Sunday evening, huge effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhkarana will be burnt symbolising the burning of evil forces.

The people have begun preparations for immersion of Durga idols at several places.
