Vijayakanth-led DMDK in Tamil Nadu, has sealed an electoral tie up with the four party People’s Welfare Front PWF ahead of the May 16 Assembly General Election. He met the leaders of the PWF including the MDMK chief Vaiko, CPM state general secretary .Ramakrishnan, CPI state general secretary Mutharasan and VCK president Thol.

Thirumavalavan at his party office in Chennai. In the meeting, it was decided that the actor-turned politician Vijayakanth would be the chief ministerial candidate. The DMDK would be contesting in 124 seats and the four party PWF allocated the remaining 110 seats under the new alliance formation.

The new political development in the Tamil Nadu has put to rest the months-long uncertainty about alliance questions. Various parties claimed proximity to firming up an alliance with the DMDK though its leader Vijayakanth maintained his position that he would prefer to be the chief ministerial candidate rather than a kingmaker.

The DMK’s patriarchal leader M.Karunanidhi on Monday repeated his earlier remark that Mr Vijayakanth would come forward to join hands with the DMK-Congress alliance. However, today’s development makes a major turn of events in the state electoral fray.

The DMDK registered a vote share of about 5-point-one percent when it contested the Lok Sabha polls under the NDA in 2014, a fall from the 10% votes it got during the Assembly elections in 2011 in the company of the AIADMK. However, even a small percentage of votes make a vast difference in a closely contested election such as the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, in determining the winning prospects.
