Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh was reelected for a sixth term after official results showed him winning 97.81 per cent of the vote in yesterday’s election. Guelleh has ruled the small Horn of Africa nation of about 1 million for more than two decades. He faced only one opponent, Mohamed Farah Samatar, a former member of the ruling party, in an election widely seen by analysts as lacking meaningful competition.

Opposition groups have often boycotted past elections, citing restrictions on political freedoms. Guelleh first came to power in 1999, succeeding his uncle, former President Hassan Gouled Aptidon, continuing a political legacy dominated by their family for decades. Djibouti holds significant strategic importance due to its location along a vital global shipping route connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
