Vice President Hamid Ansari today said that the democratic process in India has brought about a shift in political power and backward classes are now politically the most influential ones in the country.

Addressing a seminar on ‘Indian Democracy: Achievements and Challenges’ at the Corvinus University in Hungary Mr. Ansari said the backward castes won reservations for themselves in legislatures and government services through Constitutional provisions. He added there are few examples in recent history of such a conspicuous shift of political power almost without any violence and in a democratic way.

Mr Ansari said, Indian democracy faces the challenge of securing substantive equality for citizens and ensuring fraternity for the unity and integrity of the nation. He said, in order to deal with this challenge, the government accords it high priority in its socio-economic policies.

The Vice President today held wide ranging discussions with Hungarian President Janos Ader at Presidential palace at Budapest. Earlier this morning, Mr Ansari met Speaker of National Assembly at Hungary Parliament house.

Vice President later today left for Algeria after concluding his three-day visit to Hungary. During the visit he interacted with the top leadership of the country and signed two bilateral agreements.
