In Papua New Guinea, over three hundred people are feared dead after a massive landslide levelled a remote village in northern part of the country. More than 1,100 houses were also buried in the landslide that hit Kaokalam village in Enga Province, about 600 km northwest of capital Port Moresby yesterday.
More than six villages have been impacted in the province’s Mulitaka region. Media reports said, emergency teams have reached the sparsely populated area, of the Pacific nation north of Australia and the death toll is expected to rise. Prime Minister James Marape has said disaster officials, the Defence Force and the Department of Works and Highways were assisting with relief and recovery efforts. The landslide has blocked highway access, making helicopters the only way to reach the area.
