At least 10 persons were killed due to the impact of cyclone Fani in Odisha. Air India has announced that it will ship relief material to cyclone-affected people in Odisha free of cost. In a tweet, the national carrier said, NGO, Civil Society, etc can contact Resident Commissioner Odisha in New Delhi for the purpose.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Odisha on Monday to take stock of the situation due to Cyclone Fani. Earlier today Mr Modi spoke to the Governors of Odisha and West Bengal and discussed the situation prevailing due to the Cyclone.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, the entire nation stands in solidarity with all those affected by the cyclone. Mr Modi also spoke to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and assured continuous support from the Central Government in the wake of the cyclone.
In West Bengal widespread rainfall was reported in the coastal districts. Trees were uprooted in different places. Seawater entered different areas in Digha, Mandermonidue to heavy tidal waves last night.
The South Eastern Railways cancelled a number of trains as a precautionary measure. According to the Met Department, the situation is likely to improve this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Air India has resumed flight operations from Kolkata Airport this morning.
In Assam, district administrations are fully prepared to face any situation in the wake of Cyclone Fani. Several places received continuous rains since last night. Dhubri Deputy Commissioner said that all fishing activities and plying of boats have been stopped in the district. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed for any emergency.
People have been advised to contact emergency numbers 1077, 1070 and 1079 if required. Residents have been asked not to go outside and rescue teams with relief materials are kept ready. Authorities informed that flight operations at the Borjhar airport have been affected.
