Daniel Noboa will become Ecuador’s youngest-ever president after winning the runoff elections. Noboa received 52.29% of the total votes, against rival Luisa Gonzalez’s 47.71%.

Ms González accepted her defeat at the polls on Sunday night and pledged her support for the new President. Mr Noboa said, history was made by Ecuadorians as they chose a new future with security and employment. He added that electoral promises would not just remain in the campaign, and corruption would be punished. Noboa is the son of banana tycoon, Alvaro, who himself unsuccessfully stood for elections multiple times. Noboa has pledged to attract foreign investment and develop Ecuador’s business sector.

Elections in the country were held at a time when it was battling with widespread violent crimes fuelled by drug trafficking. Ecuador currently has the fourth-highest homicide rate in Latin America.
