NEW DELHI: India began its medal winning spree in the 19th Commonwealth games, bagging silver and a bronze in the 48 kg women weightlifting on Monday.

Starting as favourite to win the gold in the event, India’s Soniya Chanu managed the second place to bag the silver while compatriot Sandhya Rani Devi Atom won the bronze.

Nigerian A.N.Nwakolo won the first gold medal of the games, with a stunning performance.

In the badminton team events India blanked Kenya 5-0.

India’s potential Gold in the Women Singles Sania Nehwal crossed the first hurdle by defeating Mercy Joseph of Kenya in straight sets 21-11, 21-4.

The Indian players in Badminton defeated their Kenyan counterparts decisively in other matches.

In the Men’s Single event, Chetan Anand defeated Victor Odearu of Kenya and the Doubles duo of Rupesh and S. Thomas beat Victor Odearu and Patric Kibit.

In the Women’s Doubles, A. Punnappa and Arpana Balan won the match against Kenyan pair of Mercy Josshep and Alube A.

In Mixed Doubles India’s Jwala Gutta and V Diju defeated Nganga and Giotuka F C. (AIR)
