Counting of votes is underway across Bangladesh following the conclusion of polling in the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the referendum on the July National Charter. Voting was held from 7:30am to 4:30pm in 299 constituencies nationwide. The Election Commission (EC) said polling was largely peaceful, and voters who were inside polling centre premises before closing time were allowed to cast their ballots.
According to Senior EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, voter turnout reached 47.91 percent by 2:00pm, based on reports from 36,031 of the 42,651 polling centres.
While the EC said no polling centre suspended voting and the overall situation remained under control, several incidents were reported. These included grenade explosions in two districts and the alleged assault of an independent candidate, Habiba Begum, outside a polling centre in Rajshahi-3.
Four people reportedly died due to health complications during the day. An 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami met the Chief Election Commissioner and demanded suspension of voting in Cumilla-8, Shariatpur-2 and Patuakhali-1 constituencies, alleging irregularities and obstruction of the polling process. The Election Commission is expected to announce the results after vote tabulation is completed by returning officers.
