Congress members from both the Houses of Parliament staged a protest in front of Gandhi statue in Parliament premises for the second consecutive day today against the suspension of its 25 MPs from the Lok Sabha. The agitating members termed the suspension as undemocratic. Shouting slogans against the government, they said, the Prime Minister should break his silence over the Lalit Modi controversy and Vyapam scam. They also demanded the sacking of the External Affairs Minister for helping Lalit Modi.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and top party leaders were present at the protest. MPs belonging to Janata Dal (United), Left Parties, Samajwadi Party and RJD also joined the protest. Party President Sonia Gandhi told reporters that she was not aware of any proposal from the government to end the logjam. She said the protest will continue tomorrow. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said he respects Speaker’s position but his party is unhappy on her decision. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had suspended the Congress MPs on Monday for five days for their continued disruption in the House.
