BHU PROTEST

AMN / New Delhi

The Congress on Tuesday alleged that there is a definite pattern in the violence carried out in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and demanded that an all-party committee be set up to probe into the police lathi charge on students.

“Yeh ghatna mamuli nahi hae (This is not an ordinary incident),” UP pradesh Congress chief and AICC spokesperson Raj Babbar told reporters here and said the incident only reflects the same “modus operandi” as was experienced in University of Hyderabad and in the JNU.

“If it has to be a credible probe, an all-party parliamentary probe team should visit BHU campus and submit a report to the Centre,” he said. “There is a pattern in it” he said.

Earlier Banaras Hindu University Vice-Chancellor, GC Tripathi today said an inquiry committee headed by a retired Allahabad High Court judge VK Dixit has been set up to probe the violence in the campus.

Talking to media in New Delhi, Mr. Tripathi said, action will be taken on the basis of recommendations of the committee.

Meanwhile, Varanasi Commissioner Nitin Ramesh Gokaran has submitted his report to the government this evening about the BHU incidents.

Our correspondent says the report has held BHU authorities responsible for not handling the situation with sensitivity and not taking proper action on the complaint of eve teasing lodged by a girl student.

National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to UP government and the Vice-Chancellor over reported inaction of the University on a complaint of eve-teasing and police action against agitating students.

It has sought detailed reports from UP Chief Secretary, DGPand the BHU VC within four weeks.
