The Joint Committee on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is on a 3-day visit to Assam from today. The purpose of the visit to Guwahati and Silchar is to undertake the on-the-spot study on the issue relating to Citizenship Amendment Bill. Principal Secretary of Assam Home department, LS Sangsan said, the Committee will meet various organizations and stakeholders in Guwahati today.

Ms Sangsan said, 125 organisations and individuals will be heard by the Committee in Guwahati. She said, around 300 individuals and organisations will meet the Committee in Silchar tomorrow and the day after. Earlier, several organizations in Assam had opposed the proposed move of the Centre to give citizenship to minority people of neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh.
