Cold wave has intensified across India, particularly in the Northern parts, with Kargil in Kashmir recording the coldest night of the winter last night.

The minimum temperature dipped over two degrees to minus 13.4 degrees Celsius. The MeT department said, the night temperature also dropped at most places in Kashmir division, including Ladakh region. It has predicted a further drop in temperatures.

Meanwhile, a sunny day in Jammu region today provided some respite to people from the biting cold. The night temperature was on decline in Jammu after high altitude areas experienced heavy snowfall while rains lashed the plains in the region last week.

In the winter capital city, Jammu the maximum temperature settled at 14.3 degrees Celsius, the season’s lowest, on December 11.The maximum temperature rose after the improvement in the weather with mercury settling at 17.8 degrees Celsius yesterday – three degrees below normal.

COLD WAVE

Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, marked an improvement in the night temperature which settled at 7.2 degrees Celsius against the previous night’s 6 degrees Celsius. The snow-covered upper reaches of the region recorded a minimum between 0 to 1 degrees Celsius. The bad weather and foggy conditions also affected the air and surface transport in the area.

Cold wave conditions also continued in Himachal Pradesh after mild snowfall on higher reaches in the night.The cold wave sweeping Punjab and Haryana also continued unabated, with Bathinda today reeling at a record minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius.

In Haryana, Hisar was the coldest place recording a low of 4 degrees Celsius.
