Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to India for the annual summit between the two countries has been postponed due to the unrest in Assam and other northestern states over the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Sources said that the dates will be reworked as this is an annual summit and has to be held at some stage.

Abe was due to visit India on Sunday for the three-day trip.

He was expected to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visit places including Guwahati, a major city in the northeastern state of Assam.

But the passage of an amendment to the country’s citizenship law has sparked violent protests in Assam.

The bill grants Indian citizenship to immigrants who have fled persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, but leaves out Muslims.
