Chinese legislators have  hailed the move to amend the country’s controversial family planning law. The amendment will allow couples to have two children by scrapping the over three decades old one child policy.

At a panel discussion, they described amendment draft as of great significance to the nation in improving demographic structure and safeguarding the harmony and happiness of families, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the draft amendment submitted this week for review at the bi-monthly session of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, The State advocates that one couple can give birth to two children. China’s family planning policy was first introduced in the 1970s to rein in the surging population.

The draft came after the Communist Party of China Central Committee decided in October to give the go ahead for the universal two-child rule. NPC routinely approves CPC decisions. China has a population of 1.3 billion, the largest of any country in the world.
