RAINMeteorological Administration in China, has warned of relatively high risks of geological disasters in parts of rain-battered Yunnan and Sichuan provinces over the next 24 hours. The CMA also forecast possible mountain torrents in parts of Hebei Province, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province and Yunnan Province in the same period. The warning comes as torrential rain battered several provinces in China over the weekend, affecting hundreds of thousands of people and causing heavy economic losses.

One city in south China’s Guangdong Province Xinyi, in Maoming, saw 429.5 mm of rain in just six hours. Eight people died and four others were reported missing in the city. In the central province of Hunan, days of heavy rain have forced 18,000 people to be evacuated and left 4,000 others in need of emergency supplies.

The rainstorms have also damaged 46,000 hectares of crops. Meanwhile, in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, two people have died and more than 12,000 people had to be evacuated. The heavy rain also disrupted traffic on 41 highways and caused wide damage to irrigation projects.
