China has said, it firmly opposes any movements in Hong Kong towards independence. A statement issued by the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office said, Chinese Government resolutely opposes any form of activities calling for independence inside and outside the Legislative Council and supports Hong Kong’s government in punishing activists in accordance with law.
It said, such comments are against the Constitution and pose a threat to the country’s sovereignty and security, and also damage the territory’s prosperity and stability.
The statement came after Hong Kong candidates critical of Beijing won enough seats to veto important bills in the territory’s Legislative Council.
