The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested a police officer posted at the Kashmere Gate bus terminal for allegedly accepting a bribe from a street vendor in exchange for allowing him to continue his business.

The accused, Sub-Inspector Neeraj, who was serving as the in-charge of a police outpost at the Kashmere Gate Inter State Bus Terminal, was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting ₹20,000 as part of an illegal payment.

According to officials, the action followed a complaint filed by Mukesh Gupta, a wholesale trader of bottled drinking water operating at the bus terminal. In his complaint submitted to the CBI on March 23, 2026, Gupta alleged that the officer had demanded a monthly bribe of ₹33,000 in return for permitting him to sell bottled water at the bus stand.

Gupta, who runs his business from a roadside stall near the bus terminal, claimed that the officer had asked him to either pay ₹10 per crate of bottled water sold or a fixed monthly payment of ₹33,000 to continue operating without interference.

After receiving the complaint, the CBI conducted a verification of the allegations. During the inquiry, investigators reportedly confirmed that the police officer had been demanding illegal payments linked to the sale of bottled water crates.

Following the verification, the agency registered a formal case against the officer on March 24, 2026.

The CBI then laid a trap and caught the officer while he was allegedly accepting ₹20,000 in bribe money from the complainant.

Officials said further investigation is underway to determine whether the officer was involved in similar activities involving other vendors operating in the area.

Authorities have reiterated that strict action will be taken against public servants found involved in corruption and abuse of power.
