Amid the crackdown on beef in Uttar Pradesh, carcasses of about 40 cows, buried under a farmhouse in a Hindu doctor in Bahraich district of state were recovered on Saturday, prompting the police to launch a probe in the matter.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of officials including the sub-divisional magistrate and the chief veterinary officer visited the farmhouse of additional chief medical officer JN Mishra, Bahraich district magistrate Ajay Deep Singh said.
“The team found carcasses of 35-40 cows and their buried remains there. Apart from this, some medicines and chemicals were also found,” he said.
“The farmhouse has been sealed and police deployed there. The carcasses have been sent for postmortem and viscera for investigation,” Singh added.
He said a probe was underway to ascertain whether the cows were poisoned or not.
The district magistrate informed that Mishra was not discharging his duties properly and departmental action will be initiated against him.
Activists of Hindu Yuva Vahini had also lodged a complaint in the matter.
Dr Mishra said, “I started with nine calves. After sometime, the villagers started bringing their weak and diseased bovines here. I had served them as per my capacity, and when they died, I buried them here at the farm house itself.”
He also claimed that he never derived any profit from the cows.
During questioning, Mishra reportedly told police that he was trying to develop his farmhouse as a gaushala and hence, villagers used to leave their sick cows with him. The bodies were of sick cows and none were killed, he claimed.Bahraich ASP Dinesh Tripathi, who was part of the operation, said:“Farmhouse has been sealed and an FIR has been lodged against the ACMO on a complaint filed by Hindu Yuva Vahini’s Swami Chinmayanand Maharaj.” “No arrest has been made so far, as the drug inspector claimed that all medicines found at the spot were ayurvedic… there were also some medicinal plants. It is yet to be confirmed whether cow organs and parts were used in making the drugs
