Chennai the capital of Tamilnadu celebrates Madras Day today in commemoration of a pact inked 382 years ago. It is said that on this day in 1639 that the Madrasapatnam or Chennapatnam, a coastal village, was purchased by the East India Company.

Madras Day came into existence recently in 2004. Since then the day has been celebrated with fanfare. Chief Minister M.K.Stalin wished the people of beautiful Chennai.
