Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that the Comptroller and Auditor General will conduct a special audit into the functioning of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Replying to a discussion in the state’s legislative assembly, Mr. Fadnavis said numerous issues like poor quality of roads, mismanagement in running COVID care centres and implementation of housing and redevelopment schemes have been raised by members forcing this decision. He further said that a time-bound inquiry will also be conducted by the urban development department over allegations that civic officials set up their own companies to win contracts.
Talking about the BDD and Patra Chawl redevelopment projects, Mr. Fadnavis said the projects will be expedited and residents will be given 25,000 rupees as rent until their flats are ready. He said flats will be awarded at subsidised prices to policemen and mill workers. The deputy chief minister added that more than 29,000 sanitation workers will be provided homes with ownership rights.
Mr. Fadnavis informed the house that issues related to redevelopment of Dharavi slums are in the final stage of discussion. He said slums located on 218 acres adjacent to the Mumbai airport will be redeveloped, out of which 100 acres will be made available for airport development.
