A delegation of opposition leader under the leadership of Congress president Sonia Gandhi today met President Ramnath Kovind and handed over a memorandum to him against New Citizen Law saying present government is working against the spirit of democracy.
Opposition leaders requested president intervention regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
Urging President Kovind to advise the government to repeal the Act, leaders of the Opposition parties said that this kind of “diabolical and divisive act” is not accepted at any cost.
Talking to the media after meeting the President, Sonia Gandhi attacked the Modi government for shutting down people’s voice.
“The situation in the Northeast which is now spreading throughout country including the Capital because of the Act is a very serious situation. We fear that it may spread even further. We are anguished at the manner in which police dealt with peaceful demonstration,” she said.
“We have an example in Delhi where Police entered the Jamia women hostel and dragged them out; it mercilessly beat students. I think you all have seen that Modi govt seems to have no compassion when it comes to shutting down people’s voices and implement legislation,” she asserted.
