In Punjab, Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar has won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll. He defeated his nearest rival BJP contestant Swaran Salaria by over one lakh ninety thousand votes. Bypoll was necessitated following the death of BJP MP Vinod Khanna.

UDF (United Democratic Front ) candidate, KNA Khader has won the bypoll in Vengara assembly constituency in Malappuram district in Kerala today. Mr Khader, fielded by Indian Union Muslim league, the second biggest ally of congress led UDF, has won by over 23 thousand votes. 72% polling was reported in the election held on October 11th.

LDF(left democratic front ) candidate PP Basheer came second. The Social Democratic Party of India and NDA came third and fourth respectively.

The election was held to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Indian Union Muslim League legislator P K Kunhalikutty, following his election to Lok Sabha from Malappuram seat, which in turn had fallen vacant due to the demise of party veteran E .Ahmed, February this year.
