Voting for general election in United Kingdom is going on at around 50,000 polling stations across the country today. A total of 650 MPs will be elected, with about 50 million people registered to vote. The party leaders from the ruling coalition –Conservatives and Liberal Democrats — and Opposition Labour redoubled their efforts to win over the electorate in one of the closest elections in British history.
Indian-origin migrants that form the UK’s largest foreign-born voter population could play a decisive role in the country’s general elections. Apart from general election, there are more than 9,000 council seats being contested across 279 English local authorities. Mayors will also be elected in Bedford, Copeland, Leicester, Mansfield, Middlesbrough and Torbay.
