In Boxing, India’s Nikhat Zareen began her campaign in style in the 50kg weight class by recording a convincing victory over Azerbaijan’s Anakhanim Ismayilova in the first round of the World Women’s Championships in New Delhi yesterday.

Nikhat will take on Roumaysa Boualam of Algeria in the second round. Three other home boxers, Sakshi Chaudhary in 52kg category, Preeti in 54kg and Nupur Sheoran plus 81kg event also won their opening bouts.

Sakshi defeated Colombia’s Maria Jose Henao 5-0. She will take on Kazakhstan’s Urakbayeva Zhazira next. Preeti displayed her impressive attacking game to beat Hungarian Hanna Lakotar. She will clash with top-seeded Romanian Perijoc Lacramioara in the round of 32.

Nupur relied on her fine footwork to trounce Guyana’s Abiola Jackman 5-0. She will meet former World champion Lazzat Kungibayeva of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals.
