Opposition BJP on Wednesday forced the Rajya Sabha to adjourn for the day, holding the UPA Government responsible for police atrocities on the protesting party men against corruption. The House had stood adjourned till 1200 hrs when it began the sitting with the BJP MPs rushing into the well demanding the resignation of Home Minister P Chidambaram apparently holding him responsible for the police action against protesting BJP Yuva Morcha activists in the Capital.

When the House assembled at 1200 hrs, the BJP MPs waved the photographs highlighting the police brutalities against the party workers in Delhi and farmers in Pune which saw the killing of four farmers protesting against the diversion of water meant for agriculture to industry and domestic uses.

Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan who was in the Chair, urged the MPs not to show the photographs. When his pleadings had no effect on the MPs who rushed into the well of the House on both occasions, the Chair adjourned the House for the day. This is for the third day, the Rajya Sabha has not transacted Question Hour. On Tuesday, although the House discussed alleged corruption and irregularities in the 2010 CommonWealth Games (CWG), it saw as many as five brief adjournments.

The Lok Sabha was on Wednesday adjourned till 1400 hrs after BJP, Shiv Sena and SP members protested over firing on farmers in Pune and Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha activists in Delhi yesterday. Soon after the House met for the second time in the day, BJP, Shiv Sena and Samajwadi Party members stormed the well of the House and started shouting slogans.

All appeals of Deputy Speaker Karia Munda to return to their seat and let the House function went unheeded. Sensing the unrelenting mood of the agitating members, Mr Munda adjourned the House till 1400 hrs.

Earlier, when the House met for the first time at 1100 hrs, the principal Opposition party BJP created a ruckus in the House over the same issue.

Before the House was adjourned for the first time, members paid tribute to former Parliamentarian from the 12th Lok Sabha, Shantilal Purushottamdas Patel from Gujarat. Members also stood in silence as a mark of respect for the departed soul. Immediately after this, as Speaker Meira Kumar announced the opening of Question Hour, BJP members rushed to the well of the House raising slogans against police atrocities on ‘peacefully demonstrating’ BJYM members.

BJP members, accompanied by the Shiv Sena and Samajawadi Party, also protested against the firing on farmers in Pune who were protesting against the forcible acquisition of their land by the government.

Raising slogans, displaying placards and newspaper clippings protesting MPs demanded resignation of Home Minister P Chidambaram and dismissal of the Maharashtra government. Even as pandemonium continued the Speaker tried to continue with the Question Hour asking M Thambidurai (AIADMK) to raise his question, but nothing could be heard in the din.

After repeated requests for calm failed to impress the members, Mrs Meira Kumar adjourned the House till noon. Same scene was witnessed when the house met again. The house was finally adjourned for the day.
