BJP has decided to project Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the upcoming Assembly polls in Assam.

The decision in this regard was taken at a BJP Parliamentary Board meeting in New Delhi today in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Senior BJP leader and Union Minister J P Nadda said, the party will contest the election in Assam in the leadership of Mr Sonowal.

Mr Nadda said, during the meeting, discussion also took place in connection with the upcoming elections in various states but decision was taken only for Assam.

He exuded confidence that BJP will form the government in Assam. Party President Amit Shah and Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari were among those who attended the meeting.
