BJP has demanded a thorough probe into the conduct of the then Home Minister P Chidambaram and other top Congress leaders following another revelation by a former Home Ministry officer in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.
Former Under Secretary in the Ministry, RVS Mani has told a TV channel that he was pressurized to file the second affidavit in the Supreme Court in which the reference to the LeT terror group naming Ishrat Jahan was dropped. Earlier, former Home Secretary GK Pillai had also claimed that there was political interference in the case which led to deletion of reference to LeT from the affidavit filed in 2009.
Briefing media in New Delhi last evening, party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said, despite intelligence inputs that Ishrat was a terrorist, Mr Chidambaram changed the affidavit claiming that there was no conclusive proof in this regard. The Minister said, Mr Chidambaram did it on the direction of Congress high command to frame the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leader Amit Shah.
Congress charged the BJP with spreading false propaganda merely to score political points. Talking to media reporters in New Delhi yesterday, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, party has never supported or opposed the guilt issue of Ishrat Jahan if established in a court of law or any procedure known to law. If IB had intelligence inputs, Ishrat Jahan would have been prosecuted.
