The BJP today announced to field former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu as NDA candidate for the Presidential poll.
Addressing a press conference, BJP national president JP Nadda said the party took the decision as it wanted to field a tribal woman candidate from Eastern part of the country for the top post.
He said, the BJP Parliamentary Board discussed 20 names for presidential nominee and it was decided to pick someone from east India, a tribal and woman. He added that Union Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to the constituents of the UPA but there was no consensus on the name.
Draupadi Murmu was sworn in as the first woman Governor of Jharkhand, in the year 2015. She hails from the Santhal tribe of Odisha. Murmu started out as a teacher and then entered into Odisha politics in 1997.
