The Bharatiya Janata Party, BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal, SAD alliance has won the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation election with thumping majority. As per the results declared, BJP has won 20 seats and its alliance partner SAD one seat. An Independent candidate has also bagged one seat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed BJP’s victory in Chandigarh municipal corporation polls, saying it shows the importance the people attach to good governance.
In a tweet, Mr. Modi congratulated the BJP and Akali Dal workers for their remarkable determination on the ground and serving people.
In a tweet, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, Chandigarh traditionally reflects the national mood.
In the local body polls, Congress has won four seats. BSP failed to get even single seat in the elections held after demonetisation. Polling for 26 wards was held on Sunday and 122 candidates were in the fray.
Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal has accepted the party defeat in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation election.
He said, as the election was contested under his leadership so he owns the responsibility of the defeat. Mr Bansal said, the party will look into reasons responsible for the defeat.
BJP leader Kirron Kher has said that party was expecting such victory due to policies adopted by the Prime Minister and good work done for public by the Chandigarh Corporation.
