Nitish-Kumar

JDU Leader Nitish Kumar today resigned as Chief Minister of Bihar following his diffrence with alliance partner RJD.

Nitish handed over his resignation to Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. The development came hours after Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav earlier in the day took a jibe at Nitish Kumar, saying he was aware of his longtime friend’s party’s – Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) – growing bonhomie with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Talking to reporters outside Raj Bhavan in Patna after submitting his resignation to Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi, Mr Kumar said, present circumstances compelled him to resign from his post.

Mr. Kumar said, he tried his best to lead the grand alliance government but political situation does not permit him to continue the government.

The Governor has accepted the resignation.

Mr Kumar took this decision after JD(U) legislators’ meeting at his residence in Patna. Party sources said, Mr Kumar took the drastic decision due to ongoing political crisis arising out after lodging of an FIR against Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Prasad Yadav in land graft case by CBI.

The sudden development throws the politics of Bihar into chaos with no party having a majority in the 243-member Assembly.

JD(U) has 71 seats, while RJD headed by Tejashwi’s father Lalu Prasad, has 80. The BJP has 53.

Earlier today ruling grand alliance plunged into deep crisis when RJD Chief Lalu Prasad affirmed that his son and deputy chief minister Tejaswi Yadav would not resign from his post and asked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to decide his future course of action if he considered grand alliance a burden.

Lalu also gave a pointed reminder that his party has the most number of seats in the legislature.

After chairing a meeting of RJD legislature party at his official residence at 10, Circular Road here, Mr Yadav told media that Mr Kumar had never demanded resignation of Mr Yadav.

He said the grand alliance government would run for five years and if Mr Kumar considered it a burden, then he would decide his future course of action.
