The government of Bangladesh has prepared an ambitious plan covering the entire country to ramp up disaster management work in the country. The Tk 2276 crore plan has been prepared to procure modern equipment for quick response during emergencies arising out of natural disasters.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief seeks to cover the entire area of Bangladesh with this project including the priority areas of Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions. The project is expected to be completed by October 2023, reports the official news agency BSS.

Stressing upon the disaster prone nature of Bangladesh, Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohsin told BSS that implementation of this project would greatly help Bangladesh in conducting emergency search and rescue operations at times of natural disasters. He said that the project will enhance the institutional capacity of the agencies to respond quickly during natural disasters.

The project also entails establishment of an emergency communication system such as 4G cellular services anywhere during the time of natural disasters by using the satellite links.

Bangladesh is one of the most disaster prone countries in the world with cyclones and floods ravaging it frequently. It also faces serious environmental challenges caused by the rising sea levels due to global warming.
