Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus has assured European Union election observers that the upcoming referendum and national parliamentary elections will be held in a “free, fair, peaceful and festive atmosphere,” even as he warned that elements linked to the fallen autocratic regime may attempt to create disruptions.

Meeting the visiting EU election observation delegation on Sunday, Yunus said law enforcement agencies were fully prepared to handle any situation. He also noted growing enthusiasm among women and young voters, expressing optimism about a strong voter turnout.

Later briefing reporters at the Foreign Service Academy, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said there was no discussion on the Awami League or its participation in the election during the meeting. Yunus thanked the EU for deploying observers and stressed that all political parties would be ensured a level playing field, underlining that a credible election is vital for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.
